Every month, a particular WhatsApp group lights up. The group has aunties in it, and one cousin, and a younger sibling who handles the technology. The message is always the same: Zelle, Western Union, or the new one that does not charge a fee but takes three days. Someone sends one hundred dollars. Someone sends three hundred. The matriarch in Kinshasa or Lagos or Accra acknowledges receipt. The thread goes quiet for thirty days.
Multiply that thread by the diaspora. The result is one of the largest, quietest, least supervised pools of capital in the global economy.
