There is a particular kind of anniversary that does not require a press release. It announces itself through the sheer weight of what it has become through the faces of people who were there the first time and have not missed a year since, through the children who are now old enough to march in the parade that their parents once watched from the sidewalk.

The Nigeria Cultural Parade & Festival turns ten this year. And in the peculiar mathematics of diaspora culture, ten years of showing up in the same city, on the same October Saturday, with the same relentless insistence that Nigerian culture belongs in public space is not a small thing. It is, quietly, a monument.

“In ten years, we have gone from ‘where is that’ to make sure you get there early.”
