There is a moment, somewhere around six fifty-five PM on the evening of any major convening, when the production lead takes a small inventory. The candles are lit. The credentialing line is clear. The chair of protocol is at the inner door. The catering captain has confirmed the dietary card stack matches the place card stack. The motorcade for the head of mission of the third-largest African economy is fifteen minutes late, which is on schedule, because it is always fifteen minutes late.

The production lead exhales. Then she walks calmly to the staff room and tells the assistant to bring the ambassador in through the east entrance, because the north entryway is now under the wrong flag, because somebody, and we will never know who, switched the order of the flags between the rehearsal and the doors.

This is the substance of diplomatic event production. It is the discipline of building a room that holds itself, so that the people inside it can act as though they walked into a room that was always going to be exactly that.
